Printers have been around for a very long time. The way that these work is byforcing a metal or plastic character against an inked ribbonto produce a sharp image on paper. These characters may beon a moving bar, a rotating ball, a rapidly rotating chain,or wheel spokes. Although noisy, impact printers can producemultiple copies of business forms simultaneously usingcarbon or carbonless techniques.Non-impact printers use thermal and electrostatic, ratherthan mechanical, techniques, such as ink-jet, laser,bubble-jet, and the others mentioned above. Non-impactprinters are quieter than impact printers and produce higherquality output, especially of graphics, but at a greatercost per page of course. Inkjet printers do a great job on text printing but many people do not know that you don't need a photo printer to make great photo printouts.
